Viewing a reproduction on a laptop or tablet will not have the same resonance as being in a gallery, in front of one of Rothko's large canvases. If you are lucky enough to be able to get to a gallery and take some time in front of one of his pieces, I would recommend it. For those less fortunate in time and location, spend a little time now, with his piece "No. 61, Rust and Blue", below.
Give yourself 5 minutes, longer if you like. First, allow yourself to settle, next turn your attention to the image. Observe what your eye is drawn to, and how it moves around the painting... notice what thoughts and feelings arise, whether positive or negative. Keep returning your focus back to looking at the image in front of you, and notice what impact different parts of your experience. When you have finished feel free to write us a comment, we'd love to hear about your experience!
